include a belief in the pre-mortal existence of mankind (similar to that of Mormonism); that God Himself has a body, soul, and spirit, as well as masculine and feminine sides; that Jesus and the Word of God (also known as Christ) are not the same; a belief in the validity of astrology; and other unorthodox doctrines. One CGC-affiliated web site states that "Rev. Hicks’ teachings are unique in the way that spiritual themes and Biblical principles are tied together. Hebrew is used to bring out the hidden meanings of words in the Scripture."


According to at least one researcher, "Christ Gospel Church establishes firm authority over its adherents’ lives through the use of ’The Operating Committee’...Former members claim that Christ Gospel Church members will not date, marry, buy a home or a car, or let their children be involved in athletics without first consulting the Operating Committee."


The CGC web site indicates that members "follow the standards of old-fashioned holiness." Therefore, "The women do not wear makeup nor cut their hair."
